The number 17-seed, Francesca Schiavone of Italy, defeated seventh-seeded Samantha Stosur of Australia, 6-4, 7-6 (2), in the women’s finals of the 2010 French Open. Schiavone came into the match with only one win in five attempts against Stosur, and with her victory, became the second woman seeded lower than 10th, and the first since 1933, to win the French Open. Upon locking up the win, Schiavone dropped to her knees and kissed the red clay court of Roland Garrsos during her celebration.

On the men’s side, number two seeded Rafael Nadal defeated the fifth-seeded Robin Soderling, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, to claim the 2010 men’s title. Nadal, who fell to Soderling in the first round of the 2009 French Open, continued his clay court domination and moved to an overall record of 203-16, and is undefeated on clay in 2010 with a 22-0 mark. With the victory, Nadal moves into the number one spot in the tour rankings for the first time in over a year.
