Four-time Champion Caroline Wozniacki, Wimbledon finalist Garbine Muguruza and French Open finalist Lucie Safarova have all been awarded wild cards into the Connecticut Open, presented by United Technologies, it was announced by Tournament Director Anne Worcester. The WTA event, which is part of the Emirates Airline U.S. Open Series, will be held Aug. 21-29 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.

A four-time Connecticut Open Champion, Wozniacki has posted a 25-3 record in her seven years at the event, earning her the nickname “Queen of New Haven.” Wozniacki has 23 career WTA singles titles and held the number one world ranking for 67 weeks from 2010-2012. In 2015, the Dane has earned a title at Kuala Lumpur, runner-up finishes at Auckland and Stuttgart, and semifinal efforts at Dubai and Eastbourne. Should she capture the title this year, it would make her the winningest player in the history of the tournament, breaking the current tie with Venus Williams (1999-2002).

“The Connecticut Open has been a special place for me during my career, and there are few places on Tour where I feel more at home than in New Haven” said Wozniacki. “The fans are wonderful, and Yale provides a tremendous atmosphere for a world-class event. I’m looking forward to my time in New Haven and I hope to win my fifth Connecticut Open title.”

Since her breakout win against Serena Williams at the 2014 French Open, Muguruza has proven to be one of the elite talents in the WTA. The Spaniard advanced to the Wimbledon final this year, defeating four seeded players en route to the runner-up finish. Muguruza also boasts a semifinal effort at Dubai and a quarterfinal appearance at Roland Garros. The 21-year-old currently holds a career-high ranking of ninth in the world.

Safarova produced an incredible run to the 2015 French Open finals, defeating Grand Slam Champions Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic before a memorable three-set final against Serena Williams. Last year, Safarova advanced to the semifinals at Wimbledon before falling to eventual champion and fellow countrywoman Petra Kvitova. Safarova hoisted the trophy at Doha earlier this year and also boasts quarterfinal appearances at Dubai and Madrid.

Wozniacki, Muguruza and Safarova join a player field that now includes six of the top 10 players in the world, including Simona Halep, Defending Connecticut Open Champion Petra Kvitova, Wozniacki, Safarova, Karolina Pliskova and Muguruza. In addition, six other top 20 players are in the field, including Ekaterina Makarova, Timea Bacsinszky, Elina Svitolina, Sara Errani, Madison Keys and Belinda Bencic.

“Thanks to her incredible success and commitment to the event, Caroline Wozniacki has become synonymous with the Connecticut Open,” said Worcester. “She is without question one of the biggest stars our fans want to see. Adding Grand Slam finalists Garbine Muguruza and Lucie Safarova give the Connecticut Open a wealth of world-class talent coming to New Haven. Between Wozniacki, Muguruza and Safarova combined with early commits Halep, Kvitova, and newly-crowned Canadian Open Champion Belinda Bencic, the field is really strong. We will add one more player this week to the main draw via wildcard so by Friday it will be even stronger.”

For the second consecutive year, Fairfield, Conn. native James Blake, Andy Roddick and Jim Courier will compete in the Men’s Legends Event presented by PowerShares Series. This year, they will also be joined by John McEnroe. On Thursday, Aug. 27, Blake will play Roddick, and on Friday, Aug. 28, McEnroe will battle Courier. Both matches will be the second match of the evening session, following the WTA quarterfinal and semifinal match, respectively.
