Venus Wins Wuhan Title

Venus Williams played some of her best tennis in recent memory in Wuhan, China last week, and it resulted in her biggest title win in five years, as the unseeded American knocked off fifth-seed Garbine Muguruza 6-3, 3-0 (retired) in the Wuhan final over the weekend.

This one was close early, as both Venus and Muguruza each broke twice in the opening few games, resulting in a 4-3 first set lead for the American. And as Muguruza began to show signs of a left ankle injury, Venus rattled off the next five games to build a 6-3, 3-0 advantage.

At that score line, the ankle injury became too much for Muguruza, and the Wimbledon finalist was forced to retire.

“Congratulations Garbine for making the final,” said Venus. “I know you had a tough match yesterday—it’s not easy when you don’t play your best, and I probably didn’t have a chance you felt well!”

The title is the 47th of her career, and the first Premier-5 level tournament she has won since winning the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships back in 2010.

With the win, Venus moves up from 24th to 14th in the WTA Rankings, and despite the loss, Muguruza moves up to 5th, the first time in her career she is ranked inside the top five.

Both players will be competing in the China Open in Beijing this week.
