Bellmore JFK Girls Edge Oceanside in Conference II

October 8, 2015 | By Brian Coleman

The Bellmore JFK Cougars got back on the winning track Wednesday afternoon, downing Oceanside 5-2 in a Conference II-B matchup.

Bellmore JFK got on the board with a nice win at first singles, as Nicole Rezak beat Julieta Eulua 6-0, 6-1 to set the tone.

Oceanside would work itself back into the match thanks to its play at second and third singles. Montaine Le Goupil-Maier knocked off Sharma Shivani 6-1, 6-0 at second singles and Kaitlin Schwarz won 6-0, 6-3 over Cali Grubman at third single to put Oceanside in front.

But it was the doubles play that would come up huge for Bellmore JFK. The Cougars won all four doubles matches, highlighted by a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win by Molly Katz & Brittany Rothblut over Sam Bloecker & Melanie Krieger at first doubles in what was a highly-competitive match.

“Beating a great program like Oceanside is always a great accomplishment. Our team is very young and I think we have a bright future,” said Bellmore JFK Head Coach Brian DeGaetano. “Most high school players come in as singles players. We are still working on transitioning them to doubles play, and they are getting better every week.”

Bellmore JFK will host South Side next, while Oceanside will host Lynbrook.

New Hyde Park remained unbeaten on Wednesday as the Gladiators defeated Long Beach 4-3 in a tight Conference III-B battle.

The doubles tandems led the way for New Hyde Park. Abby Wizel & Priyanka Algu beat Kristen Koff & Danielle Breen 6-3, 6-4 at first doubles and Natalie Cullen & Sara Ng defeated Samantha Lassman & Solomiya Sotnik at fourth doubles to seal the deal.

New Hyde Park is now 10-0 ahead of a home match against Valley Stream South. Long Beach will host Valley Stream North next.

Alyssa Ghassabian knocked off Stephanie Buchheim 7-5, 6-3 at third singles to anchor a 5-2 Great Neck North win over Wheatley in Conference II-A on Wednesday. The win moves the Blazers to 10-1 on the year and they will take on Cold Spring Harbor in a road match next.
