The defending champions of Nassau County, the Syosset Braves, kicked off its 2016 campaign with a victory on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping Jericho 7-0 in Conference I play.

The Braves lost a number of starters from last spring’s county champion team to graduation, and will be relying on a younger roster to repeat. That was evident on Tuesday as freshman Neel Rajesh led the way, beating Jericho senior Brady Berman 6-2, 6-0 to anchor the victory for Syosset.

Elsewhere in Conference I action, Port Washington edged Plainview JFK 4-3 to open up its season with a victory.

T.J. Serignese clinched the win for the Vikings, coming back from a set down to beat Jared Phillips 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 at second singles.

In Conference II-B, the Sailors of Oceanside got past Bellmore JFK 4-3 to begin its season victorious.

This match was tight throughout as both teams fought through the cold and windy conditions. Bellmore JFK won the three singles matches, with two of them going the full three sets, but Oceanside’s doubles play came up huge. It swept all four doubles matches in straight sets to clinch the victory.

In a Conference III-A showdown, Dayquan Crawley battled back to beat Preston Yeh 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 at second singles to lead West Hempstead past Valley Stream South 5-2.

Lynbrook got past Bethpage in Conference III-B play. The Eagles got straight set wins from Ben Tetelman, Azam Hussin and Matt Moreida in singles play to lead the way.
