The Commack Cougars improved to 8-1 on the season and 4-1 in League I play on Friday afternoon, defeating Harborfields 6-1.

On what was one of the nicest weather days of the young season, it was the singles play that got things going for Commack early.

Peter Yu was the first to notch a victory as he beat Harborfields’ Will Kranz 6-1, 6-2 at second singles. Andy Zhou followed it up with a 7-5, 6-1 over Garrett Sebold at first singles and Sol Yoon added a 6-1, 6-4 over Michael Singer at third singles.

Commack swept all three doubles matches, including a thrilling 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 victory by Ryan Schoenfeld & Gabe Chan over Bobby Bellino & Jacob Chalif at second doubles.

The lone win for Harborfields came from Alex Rzehak, who defeated Tyler D’Amato 6-3, 6-3 at fourth singles.

The victory got Commack back on the winning track following a hard-fought 7-0 defeat at the hands of defending Suffolk County champions Half Hollow Hills West.

“It was important for us to come out with a win after that loss. Harborfields has some nice players and a lot of depth, so it was good for us to get a good victory and right the ship,” said Commack Head Coach Shane Helfner. “We feel that Hills East, Hills West and we are three of the best teams in Suffolk County and anyone can win any match against each other on any given day. Our greatest strength is our depth, and I think our win against Harborfields showed that depth.”

In Nassau County, Syosset continued its hot start to the 2016 season, beating Port Washington 6-1 to improve to 6-0 on the season. Spencer Lowitt clinched the match for the Braves, beating T.J. Serignese at second singles to anchor the victory.

Plainview JFK picked up a nice 5-2 win over Great Neck South. Jared Phillips led the way with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Eric Rofe at first singles.

In Conference II-A, South Side notched its second consecutive win, moving past Locust Valley 6-1 on Friday afternoon. This match was tighter than the score would indicate as all the flights were competitive, and the Cyclones got a key 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 comeback win from Brian Scala & Harry Ludwig at third doubles to lead the way.

Lynbrook won its second straight match in Conference III-B, edging Long Beach 4-3.

Lynbrook won two of the three singles flights, as Ben Tetelman & Azam Hussain picked up wins at first and second singles, respectively. After Justin Weissberg defeated Dean Tetelman at third singles to get Long Beach on the board, Lynbrook got wins from its second and third doubles tandems to clinch the victory.

Brian Gomberg & Dustin Mandell won a tight 7-6(3), 7-6(2) match over Cooper Evertt & Brett Weiner at second doubles to help secure the victory.
