Beach Tennis USA and Long Island Tennis Magazine present the third leg of the Long Island Tennis Magazine Challenge, set for Saturday, July 17-Sunday July 18 at Grand Avenue at the Boardwalk in Long Beach, N.Y.
This tournament brings professional players out to compete for ITF World Ranking Points and Beach Tennis USA Ranking Points, as well as $1,000 in cash prizes, setting them up for the National Championships, scheduled for Labor Day Weekend in Long Beach, N.Y., and also the International Beach Tennis Event in Aruba this November.

The Challenge also allows for all amateurs to come on out and join in on the fun as well, playing in additional tournaments for prizes. Anyone who hasn’t tried beach tennis, can demo a paddle on one of Long Beach’s beach tennis courts for free.

Take the fun and fast-paced sport of tennis … combine it with the sun, sea, surf and sand of the beach … and you have beach tennis, the most electrifying new sport to hit the U.S. Beach tennis merges the worlds of tennis and beach volleyball into one exciting sport. It can be played both competitively and for fun, and because it’s so simple to play, it appeals to athletes and non-athletes of all ages.

So what exactly is beach tennis? It’s like regular tennis except it’s played on a regulation beach volleyball court. Using beach tennis paddles, two players on each team volley back and forth, hitting a slightly depressurized tennis ball directly over the net without letting it bounce. One hit per team is all that’s allowed. Your team scores a point each time your opponents hit the ball outside the lines or let it hit the sand.

This weekends schedule:

►Play begins Saturday, July 17, as the Men’s Pro Division begins action at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Women’s Pro Division beginning play at noon. Juniors action begins at 4:00 p.m.

►Men’s and Women’s Amateurs play starts on Sunday, July 18 at 11:00 a.m. with a mixed-doubles tournament starting in the afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
