The Nassau County team playoffs got underway on a gloomy Tuesday afternoon as teams battled for spots in the quarterfinals.

The sixth-seeded Jayhawks of Jericho defeated Oceanside 5-0 to book its spot in the final eight. Mitchell Leighton and Jake Bernstein led the way for Jericho, defeating Jason Zagorski and Matt DeGroot 6-3, 6-1 at second doubles.

Jericho will take on second-seed Cold Spring Harbor on Wednesday.

Friends Academy edged Great Neck South 4-3 on Tuesday to move into the quarterfinals. Samir Singh moved past Eric Rose 7-6, 6-1 at third singles to lead the way for Friends, who will take on undefeated and top-seed Syosset on Wednesday.

Fresh off of his second straight Nassau County singles championship, Plainview JFK’s Yuval Solomon led the Hawks into the team quarterfinals, notching a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles to anchor Plainview’s 6-1 win over East Meadow on Tuesday. Solomon has now won 29 straight matches in Nassau according to head coach Nick Ventimiglia.

Plainview will take on the winner of Wheatley and Great Neck North in the quarterfinals.

Wheatley secured the final first round playoff spot, defeating Manhasset 4-3 in a tiebreaker on Tuesday.

Both teams entered Tuesday’s match with identical records of 11-3 and had split their previous two meetings this season. The clinching match came at first doubles, as Wheatley’s Ethan Nussdorf and Jack Goldman came back from a set down to beat Bob Catleft and Steve Salermo  2-6, 7-6(5), 6-3.

Wheatley will take on Great Neck North on Wednesday afternoon.

Roslyn defeated Plainedge 7-0 and Port Washington beat Garden City 4-1 to set up the other quarterfinal matchup.
