The New York Empire defeated six-time defending Mylan World TeamTennis champion Washington Kastles 21-19 on Monday night, as Marcus Willis defeated Stephane Robert 5-4 in the final Men’s Singles set to clinch the victory.

Willis, who you may know from his Wimbledon fame, joined the Empire on Monday night. He played in two matches, falling in Men’s Doubles with Neal Skupski to Robert and Treat Huey, but he responded in the final set to help push the Empire past the Kastles.

Skupski paired with Maria Irigoyen to down Huey and Andreja Klepac 5-4 in the Mixed Doubles set to open things up, and then Christina McHale defeated Madison Brengle 5-1 in the Women’s Singles set.

After Skupski and Willis lost at Men’s Doubles, Brengle and Klepac beat Irigoyen and McHale 5-2 in the Women’s Doubles set, leaving the Empire with a slim 16-15 lead heading into the deciding set. Willis than sealed the deal with his 5-4 victory over Robert.

The Empire return to Forest Hills Stadium at the West Side Tennis Club to take on the Kastles again, as Andy Roddick joins the Empire roster as its featured player tonight.
