The spring season for much of Nassau County got underway on Thursday as the majority of teams played in their league openers on a crisp, early spring afternoon.
In Conference I, Port Washington knocked off Plainview JFK 5-2 to join Syosset as 1-0 teams atop the county’s top conference. Justin Suzan and Dylan Spilko helped secure the Port Washington victory with a win over David Weismann and Ethan Bloom at second doubles.
Also in Conference I, Roslyn swept all seven courts for a 7-0 triumph over Great Neck North.
North Shore won its Conference II-A opener with a 5-2 win over Herricks. Jagger Gillman and Blake Mandell anchored the win with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at third doubles to help push North Shore to the win.
A couple of Conference II-B teams who are expecting to compete in the playoffs later this year, South Side and Massapequa, got their seasons off on the right foot with victories on Wednesday.
South Side took down Lynbrook 6-1, anchored by a 6-1, 6-2 win by Harry Ludwig and Chris Mullooly at first doubles. Senior Chuck Silecchia also chipped in with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at second singles.
Oceanside beat Valley Stream Central to win its opener in Conference II-B.
The Chiefs of Massapequa edged out Bellmore 4-3. The match would come down to the fourth doubles court in a thrilling three-set match, as Steve Schulte and Michael Grisanti clinched the Massapequa win with a 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(4) win over Jake Gallito and Hugh Cheung. Matthew Musalo beat Andrew Smith 7-6(3), 7-6(2) in a highly competitive second singles contest.
Carle Place defeated Oyster Bay 4-3 in a thrilling Conference III-A matchup. Giancarlo Cavallero defeated Michael Biaggiani at first singles for the Frogs, but Oyster Bay responded with wins from Jed Kaiser and Preston Rosh.
Playing in his first ever match at the Varsity level, James Wright paired with Aidan Tammarow to come back and beat Matt Tepper and Avi Gupta at fourth doubles. The clinching match came at second doubles, as Matt Rivera and Frank Ortiz of Carle Place came back from a set down to beat Eddie Kemp and Nicholas Rivera to seal the victory for the Frogs.
After a tough finish to last season, West Hempstead began this year with a win, knocking off Hempstead 7-0 on Thursday. Navid Ashrafi defeated Crez Nathaniel 6-1, 6-0 at second singles to lead the way.
Also in Conference IV, Valley Stream South took all the courts to notch a 7-0 win over Freeport. David Huang won 6-2, 6-2 over Jordan Gardiner in the second singles spot as a part of the seven Valley Stream South wins.
Wantagh (pictured above) knocked off Valley Stream North 6-1 in Thursday’s other Conference IV matchup.
