The USTA has announced that Tim Smyczek of Milwaukee, Wis. and Beatrice Capra of Ellicott City, Md. has won the U.S. Open Wild Card Playoff and will receive a men’s and women’s main draw singles wild card into the 2010 U.S. Open. Eight men and eight women competed for the wild cards Aug. 18-20 at the USTA Training Center Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla.

Number one seed Smyczek defeated the second seeded Ryan Harrison, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, in the best-of-five-set final, and number two seed Capra upset the number one seed, Madison Brengle, 7-6(4), 6-4.

Smyczek, 22, cracked the Top 200 for the first time this year after qualifying for two ATP Masters Series events and the Olympus U.S. Open Series event in Los Angeles. He also reached his fifth career USTA Pro Circuit final. At the 2009 U.S. Open, Smyczek defeated former world number 10-ranked Arnaud Clement to advance to the second round of qualifying. As a junior, Smyczek was a Wimbledon semifinalist in 2005, and he served as a practice partner for the U.S. Davis Cup team in 2006. He is currently ranked number 196th in the ATP World Tour Rankings.

Capra, 18, entered the Top 10 of the world junior rankings earlier this year, with titles at the prestigious Italian Open and a quarterfinal showing at the Roland Garros juniors. Capra was also a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Open juniors in 2009, the same year she won her first pro singles title on the USTA Pro Circuit at the $10,000 event in Williamsburg, Va. She is currently number 369th on the WTA Tour.

The U.S. Open Wild Card Playoff was hosted by USTA Player Development. The USTA has held wild card playoffs since 2007 to determine wild cards into the Australian and French Opens per reciprocal agreements with Tennis Australia and the French Tennis Federation.

The 2010 U.S. Open will be played Aug. 30-Sept. 12 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
