Americans Isner, Keys Win Roland Garros Openers

May 30, 2017 | By Long Island Tennis Magazine Staff

It hasn’t been the best start to the 2017 French Open for Americans, but John Isner and Madison Keys both advanced to the second round at Roland Garros on Tuesday.

Isner moved past Australia’s Jordan Thompson 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 in two hours and 37 minutes. Isner fired 53 winners and converted on all three of his break point chances.

Up next for Isner is Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi, who knocked off Ricardas Berankis 6-0, 6-2, 6-4.

Keys cruised past Ashleigh Barty of Australia in just over an hour, advancing to the second round with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

“In the first set, she was serving really well and I had just a handful of opportunities to break, and I didn’t quite get my teeth into all of those,” said Keys. “But I was really happy with how I played in the second set especially—looking to come forward and all of that. Overall, I’m really happy.”

Keys will meet Croatia’s Petra Mertic next. Mertic defeated Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2, 7-5 on Tuesday.
