As classes for the 2017-2018 school year began this week, so did the launch of the Girls High School Tennis season, as teams took to the courts for action Thursday to kick off the new year.
Players from across Nassau gathered on the courts and welcomed the new season as Syosset began Conference I play at Manhasset with a 5-2 win. The Lady Braves clinched the win at third doubles, as Syosset’s Alex Flicker teamed with seventh grader Olivia Tiegerman for a 6-3, 7-6(6) win over Manhasset’s Lily Creem & Emily Ma.
Great Neck North welcomed Port Washington to their courts to begin Conference I play on the season, and it was the home team taking the opening match 5-2. Alyssa Ghassabian clinched the win for Great Neck North at third singles, a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Port Washington’s Tiffany McGowan.
Also in Conference I, visitors Cold Spring Harbor traveled to North Shore High School and came away with the 5-1 win.
In Conference II-A play, it was the home team Great Neck South edging Hewlett 4-3, as the duo of Allie Liman & Morgan Mittler clinched the team victory with a three-set win at third doubles, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-4. Also in Conference II-A, Lynbrook edged Garden City 4-3 on the road for its first
In Conference II-B, South Side opened their 2017 campaign on the road with a 5-2 win over Bellmore JFK. Julia Gentile won her singles match at second singles, while the team of Katie Mazzanobile & Caroline Ditchik clinched the match victory with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win at first doubles.
Plainedge looked to build upon its success of last year and got things started in dominant fashion with a 6-1 win over Carey in Conference III-A action for its first win on the young season.
