Long Island High School Recap 9/11

While the U.S. Open was wrapping up this weekend, the high school tennis season was continuing to get underway across Long Island as most teams played matches on Friday afternoon.

Herricks got its season off to a good start with a 6-1 triumph over Garden City. Aashna Brahmbhatt and Shreya Rao beat Maggie Digan and Alex Adams in the fourth doubles spot help Herricks win its first match of the season.

Sydney Travis came back to beat Michelle Raja 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 to lead Lynbrook past Wheatley 4-3. The Owls are now 2-0 in Nassau II-A. South Side and Great Neck South also improved to 2-0 on the early season with wins Friday.

The Cyclones of South Side won 6-1 against New Hyde Park. Kendall Kelly won 6-0, 6-3 over Sabrina Wong in the third singles spot, while Caroline Ditchik and Katie Mazzanobile lost just four games in their first doubles match to lead South Side.

Great Neck South edged Jericho 4-3 thanks to the comeback win by Erica Engel and Samantha Zeltser, who won 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at second doubles to clinch the Lady Rebels’ win.

Freshman Rachel Arbitman beat Anastasia Koniaev 6-0, 3-6, 10-5 in a battle between two of the best players in Nassau County, as Hewlett defeated Locust Valley 6-1.

In Conference I action, Natalia Krol fought back to  beat Jessie Levy 6-7, 7-5, 10-8 in the first singles matchup to lead her Roslyn Bulldogs past Syosset 5-2, while Thea Rabman came back to win 2-6, 6-2, 10-3 against Olivia Scordo at first singles in a 7-0 Port Washington victory over North Shore.

The defending Suffolk County champions Commack Cougars improved to 2-0 on the year with a 7-0 win over Half Hollow Hills West. Julia Kinalis and Emma Matz won at first doubles while Emily Tannenbaum won at first singles to lead Commack to the win.

Taylor Goetz led Harborfields to a 6-1 win over Smithtown East as she defeated Hailey Stoerback 7-6(3), 7-5 at first singles in Suffolk 1.

Julia Hu and Dara Berman won 6-0, 6-0 at first doubles to lead Ward Melville to a 6-1 win over Sachem East as it improved to 3-0 in League V.
