Labor Day Monday saw a full card of great tennis at the USTA Billie Jean KIng National Tennis Center for Day Eight of the 2010 U.S. Open.

In the men’s draw, second-seeded Roger Federer won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3, over 13th seeded Jurgen Melzer to advance to the quarterfinals. He will now prepare for a top five showdown with fifth-seeded Robin Soderling, who advanced to the quarters with a straight set win of his own over Alberto Montanes. Federer and Soderling will meet on Wednesday, most likely under the lights, in the featued evening session match.

In a battle between two Frenchman, Gael Monfils earned his first U.S. Open quarterfinals appearance with a 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 win over Richard Gasquet, a former top 10 player who was unseeded this year. Monfils won using a defensive style of play, which kept rallies going, and put the onus on Gasquet to make shots. Gasquet was not able to make enough shots to survive, as he fell in straight sets. Monfils entertained the crowd with his athleticism and creative shot-making ability and has become a fan favorite at this year’s Open. He will now face his toughest challenge so far when he takes on third-seeded Novak Djokovic in the Quarters. Djokovic easily dispatched of American Mardy Fish, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1. Fish who had come into the tournament off a win at the Pilot Pen and had been playing his best tennis in a long time, was outplayed by Djokovic from start to finish. This now leaves Sam Querrey as the only American remaining in the singles draw.

On the women’s side, the featured match was top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki against former world number one Maria Sharapova. While Sharapova gave Wozniacki her biggest challenge of the tournament thus far, it wasn’t nearly enough as Wozniacki bounced Sharapova from the tournament in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Wozniacki who has yet to drop a set in this year’s Open, will now face Dominika Cibulkova in the quarterfinals. Cibulkova will be making her first quarterfinal appearance at a major. She punched her ticket to the Quarters with an upset win over 11th-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, 7-5, 7-6.

The other women’s quarterfinal match on the top half of the draw will feature seventh-seeded Vera Zvonareva taking on 31st-seeded Kaia Kanepi. Zvonareva won easily, 6-1, 6-2 over Andrea Petkovic, while Kanepi was an upset winner over Yanina Wickmayer. Kanepi dropped the first set 0-6, before rallying to win the next two sets, 7-6, 6-1.

In Tuesday action at the Open, American Sam Querrey will take on Stanislav Wawrinka, Fernando Verdasco will battle with David Ferrer, Rafael Nadal will face Feliciano Lopez, and Michael Youzhny will play Tommy Rebredo in men’s round of 16 matches.

In the two women’s quarterfinals to be played today, it will be Venus Williams taking on Francesca Schiavone and Samantha Stosur will battle 2009 Open winner, Kim Clijsters.
