The WTA came out with its end-of-season awards recently, and 23-year-old Australian Ashleigh Barty was named the tour’s Player of the Year for 2019.

The current world number one captured the first Grand Slam title of her career at the French Open, becoming the first Australian to win at Roland Garros since Margaret Court in 1973. She is also the first Australian woman to hold the world’s highest ranking since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1976.

Barty posted 57 wins this season, the most by any player on tour.

“She had success on all surfaces, finishing in the Top 10 on Tour for wins on hard courts, clay courts and grass courts over the course of 2019 and winning tournaments on each,” the WTA said in its announcement.

US Open champion Bianca Andreescu was named the Newcomer of the Year, while Belinda Bencic of Switzerland was named the Comeback Player of the Year.
