The Commack Cougars continued its dominant 2023 campaign as the team swept both the singles and doubles titles at Suffolk County’s Division I Individual Championships at Smithtown West High School on Monday afternoon.

Eddie Liao, the two-time defending county champion, captured the Divisional title once again as he defeated Bryan Volk of Half Hollow Hills West 6-1, 6-1 in the finals.

“My forehand was working well today, and being mentally resilient was key for me,” said Liao. “It helped having the crowd here watching, there was a lot of great Commack support. It feels nice, and I hope I can continue this in the county tournament.”

Liao’s Commack teammates, James Yu & Joe Romito, took the doubles title as they posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Krithik Madisetty & Lohit Madisetty of Half Hollow Hills East in the championship match.

Joe Romito & James Yu won the Suffolk County Division I Doubles title on Monday afternoon.

“We enjoy playing together and communicate well,” said Romito. “We don’t get mad at each other if we miss a shot, and continue to push each other through the tough points. That chemistry helps a lot.”

Yu added:

“It feels amazing, it’s a great accomplishment. The goal now is to move on from this, try to win the county title and hopefully compete for a state title.”
