After eight years, Jim Courier is stepping down as captain of the United States’ Davis Cup team, the USTA announced on Thursday.

Courier informed the team of his decision after its semifinal loss to Croatia last week.

“It’s been my honor and privilege to represent the USTA and USA as a player and captain,” said Courier. “I look forward to cheering the team on as they pursue the cup in its new format next year and beyond.”

Courier led the United States to 10 wins in Davis Cup play, tied for seventh most all-time. His eight-year run is the second longest in US history. Only Patrick McEnroe, who coached for 10 years, coached the team longer.

“We thank Jim for his commitment to excellence and to the Davis Cup team,” said USTA Chairman of the Board and President Katrina Adams. “I have been proud to travel the world with Jim and watch first hand as he delivered the highest level of integrity and devotion to success.”

A replacement for Courier has not yet been named. The United States next plays in November 2019.
