American teenager Coco Gauff completed the sweep in Parma, Italy this weekend as she claimed both the singles and doubles championships at the Emilia-Romagna Open.
Gauff won the singles title with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Wang Qiang.
“I think I did well in engaging every point and pushing her back,” said Gauff. “I know she normally likes to be aggressive. One of the main goals for me was just to be able to push her back and set up the shots I like to it.
The win was the 20th in her last 26 matches, and catapulted Gauff to a career-high ranking of 25th in the world.
She was not done, however, as she returned to the Parma clay courts later in the day to compete for the doubles title alongside Caty McNally. The duo upended the second-seeded pairing of Darija Jurak & Andreja Klepac 6-3, 6-2 to win their third title together.
"It definitely means a lot, especially on clay, which is not really a surface I feel like people associate with me," said Gauff. "I always liked [clay], but I always fall on it, I always get dirty! I have good results on it, so it’s not about my performance. It’s just that clay shows you a little extra love than the other surfaces do."
