The Long Island tennis community lost a valued member this week, as USTA Long Island Regional Council Member Eileen Leonard passed away.

“Eileen was an icon and we will all miss her. No greater Ambassador of Long Island tennis than Eileen,” said Jonathan Klee, USTA Long Island Region Council President.

Leonard graduated from Rollins College in Florida and became a teacher at St. Kilian’s School in Farmingdale. She had a lifelong passion for tennis which led to her serving as President of the Eastern Tennis Umpires Association, and serving on the Long Island board for more than 30 years.

During her time in tennis in the Eastern section, she won the USTA Eastern Tennis Woman of the Year Award, the Nicolas E. Powel Award and the Umpires Service Award.

We send our deepest condolences to Eileen’s family. May she rest in peace.
