Rafael Nadal announced on Monday that he has tested positive for COVID-19. Upon arriving in Spain following competing in an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi last week, Nadal’s tests came back positive.

“I wanted to announce that on my return home after playing the Abu Dhabi tournament, I have tested positive for COVID in the PCR test that has been performed on me when I arrived in Spain,” Nadal shared on Twitter. “I am having some unpleasant moments but I hope that I will improve little by little. I am now homebound and have reported the result to those who have been in contact with me.”

Nadal was making his return to competition as he attempts to come back from a foot injury. The 35-year-old took part in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in the United Arab Emirates last week, his first matches since the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. earlier this summer.

His positive test leaves his appearance at the Australian Open, which begins on January 17, in doubt.

“As a result of the situation, I have to have total flexibility with my calendar and I will analyze my options depending on my evolution,” Nadal said. “I will keep you informed of any decisions about my future tournaments.”
