The Port Washington boys varsity tennis team conducted its annual Play with the Teachers tournament on Tuesday to raise money for autism awareness.
Each player from the team paired up with a teacher or administrator from the school district to compete in a friendly doubles tournament.
The team’s head coach, Shane Helfner, began this event when he was coaching at Commack in 2009, and after bringing it to Port Washington, the district has made it a yearly event.
“I am beyond proud of our players and the Port Washington community for hosting this annual event. This event is a great way to bring together the community, school and tennis program for such a worthy cause,” said Helfner. “While Port Washington was able to find success on the court by winning the Long Island Championship this year, the team also knows the importance of giving back to the community as well.”
In all, the event raised more than $800 which will be donated to Aceing Autism, and Alex Karman and Ms. Doherty were the tournament's winners.
