Port Washington, Great Neck North Clinch Top Two Seeds in Nassau Playoffs

The Nassau County regular season came to a close on Tuesday afternoon, and it was once again Port Washington and Great Neck North who continued its winning ways, coming out on top in their respective season finales to clinch the top two seeds in the county playoffs.

Port Washington won its 13th straight match by downing Cold Spring Harbor 7-0. Seventh grader Thea Rabman continued her great play in the first singles spot, coming back from a set down to win 1-6, 6-3, 10-7 to help anchor the Vikings victory.

With the win, Port Washington finishes the season at 13-1 and wins Nassau County’s Conference I.

“This is a huge step forward for our program,” said Port Washington head coach Shane Helfner, who indicated the last time Port Washington won its conference was back in 2008. “We are still very young and have a nice young core to be able to be very good for a long time.

While our goal is to hopefully win a county championship, winning the conference is a great accomplishment that we are very proud of.”

Finishing in second place in Nassau’s top conference and earning the second seed in the county playoffs is Great Neck North, who edged Roslyn 4-3 on Tuesday to clinch the second spot. Ashley Yu and Margaret Haykin notched a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 over Ali Glick and Anna Dicker at first doubles to seal the win.

Syosset wrapped up the fourth seed in the playoffs with a 6-1 triumph over North Shore. The clinching match would come on the first doubles court as Alex Ho and Sarah Wong notched a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Siobhan Esposito and Mireya Martin. North Shore’s lone victory came at first singles as Olivia Scordo beat Jessie Levy 7-6, 6-0. 

South Side will enter the county playoffs with some momentum after winning its fourth consecutive match on Tuesday. The Cyclones defeated Mepham 5-2, thanks to its singles play, as Lauren Zola, Julia Gentile and Kendall Kelly won at first, second and third singles, respectively, to clinch the victory.

South Side earns the 11th seed in the county playoffs, and is slated to meet Manhasset in the first round on Thursday.

In Conference II-A, Great Neck South won its sixth straight with a 4-3 triumph over Wheatley to conclude its regular season at 12-2. The Rebels will travel to Cold Spring Harbor for its first round match on Thursday.

Port Washington and Great Neck North receive byes into the quarterfinals. Below are the first round matchups which will be played on Thursday:
