Syosset’s Kabir Rajpal booked his spot in the singles final of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Championships with two victories on Friday.

Rajpal, the Nassau County champion, defeated Washingtonville’s Gabriel Castillo-Sanchez 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, before winning 6-3, 7-6(2) over Peter Hatton of Jamesville-Dewitt in the semifinals.

“It means a lot, especially to play against Ryan. We’ve been friends for a long time,” said Rajpal, referring to his final opponent, Geneva’s Ryan Fishback, the tournament’s top-seed and a finalist a year ago. “It’s the biggest stage we have here in New York, so I’m going to enjoy every moment of it.”

Roslyn’s Adrian Tsiu and Mikey Weitz came up just short in the doubles semifinals as Scarsdale’s Nikolay Sahakyan and Jason Shuler edged the pair 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 to reach the finals. Weitz and Tsui will compete in the third-place match.

Play resumes on Saturday morning at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
