The USTA Long Island Region has announced it will host the 2020-21 Long Island USTA High School Tennis Individual Championships, a one-time event that will feature the four top-placing singles and doubles teams from Nassau and Suffolk County.
The Championships, which will be an official USTA Eastern sanctioned L6 Girls 18U Invitational Tournament, is set to be held on Saturday, June 5 (rain date of Sunday, June 6) starting at 9:00 a.m. on the Hofstra University Tennis Courts. There will be a main draw and consolation draw, so every participant is guaranteed to play at least two matches.
The first-round matches of the main draw will be an eight-game pro-set, with the semifinals and finals being best two-out-of-three sets. There will be no-ad scoring, and the third set will be a 10-point super tiebreaker. All consolation matches will be eight-game pro-sets with no ad scoring.
“With the New York State High School Championships cancelled this year, the USTA LI Council wanted to give our top high school players an opportunity to have a chance to win a USTA Long Island Championship,” said USTA Long Island Region Council Chair Jonathan Klee. “Coordinating with USTA Eastern staff, our volunteers put this invitational championship together to allow the top Nassau and Suffolk players to compete in a Level 6 USTA 18 and Under event.”
There is no entry fee for this tournament, and every all-state singles player and doubles team from each county are guaranteed entry. Doubles teams must register individually but play with their partner from the county tournament to be eligible. If you are an all-county winner, you are encouraged to enter and will gain entry into the tournament (with preference to grade seniority and an all-factors method) if a spot becomes available.
An awards presentation recognizing all the participants of this special tennis event will take place immediately after the last match. The winners will also be recognized at the annual USTA Long Island Awards ceremony.
Registration will soon be made available on PlayTennis.USTA.com and please e-mail your commitment, upon eligibility, to play to Neil Thakur, USTA Eastern’s TSR and Schools Manager for Long Island/Metro Regions, at thakur@eastern.usta.com.
“Hofstra University’s Division I College Tennis Facility is the perfect site to hold this USTA Long Island Championship which for some of our players will be an excellent venue to culminate their high school careers,” added Klee. “We are in the process of putting together the Boy’s tournament which will be held in late June after both Nassau and Suffolk have concluded their county championships.”
