The threat of rain and thunderstorms loom once again for the second consecutive day over the skies of Flushing Meadows, N.Y. as for the second consecutive day, matches at the 2012 U.S. Open are potentially once again in jeopardy. Yesterday, only a few of the regularly scheduled matches were played, as only four matches in the main draw were finished before the rain washed away the remainder of the schedule, setting up a loaded lineup for Day 10 on Wednesday.

Of yesterday’s action, the only matches to see completion were top-seeded Victoria Azarenka advancing to the women’s singles semis with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(5) win over defending champ Samantha Stosur; fourth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer defeating France’s Richard Gasquet 7-5, 6-2(2), 6-4 to move on to the quarterfinals; Sara Errani & Roberta Vinci of Italy defeating Julia Goerges of Germany & Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic 6-2, 7-6(2) to move on to the women’s doubles semifinals; and the men’s doubles team of Marcel Granollers & Marc Lopez of Spain defeating Alexander Peya of Austria & Brazil’s Bruno Soares, 6-3, 6-4, to move on to the men’s semis in doubles.

A handful of matches that began will pick up today after the rains came and washed away Day Nine. Kicking things off and scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Ashe Stadium, 11th-seeded Marion Bartoli of France will pick up with a first-set 4-0 lead over the number three seed, Maria Sharapova. The Day Session at Ashe concludes with the quarterfinals match between Andy Murray of Great Britain and 12th-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia. Murray has a 6-1 lifetime record over Cilic, with his only loss coming in 2009 in the fourth round of the U.S. Open.

The Evening Session at Ashe gets underway at 7:00 p.m., as 12th-seeded Serbian Ana Ivanovic takes on American Serena Williams for a shot at the semifinals. Serena has yet to lose to Ivanovic, with three wins over her career against the Serbian, two of those three taking place at the U.S. Open. The night wraps with a trip to the men’s singles semis on the line as top-seeded Roger Federer faces the number six seed, Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.

At Louis Armstrong Stadium at 11:00 a.m., 10th-seeded Italian Sara Errani faces fellow countrywoman and doubles partner, Roberta Vinci, the 20-seed, for a spot in the semifinals. Errani has three wins in five career matches against Vinci. On the Grandstand at 11:00 a.m. and picking up from where they left off yesterday, the ninth-seeded men’s doubles team of Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi & Jean-Julien Rojer lead the unseeded American tandem of Christian & Ryan Harrison 6-2, 2-2, while immediately following, Janko Tipsarevic begins play against the 19th-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber with a 5-2 lead in the first set.
