France’s Kristina Mladenovic fought back from a set down to upend top-seeded Lucie Safarova in the first-round of the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday. The unseeded Mladenovic turned on another gear in the middle of the second set as she picked up the 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Czech.

Safarova looked to be in peak form early on in the match as she bolted out to a 6-2 first set victory. Mladenovic hung tough and at 3-3 in the second set she began to find her own form and turned the tides of the match.

After holding serve to go up 4-3, the France native broke Safarova’s serve for the first time in the match. She followed that up with another hold to capture the second set and force the third set.

Despite the three straight game victories for Mladenovic, Safarova jumped ahead 2-1 in the deciding set when the serve was handed over to her opponent. From there, the 78th ranked Mladenovic rattled off five of the next six games to stun the top-seeded Safarova and move into the second round.

“I thought, ‘Wow, she’s playing good’,” said Mladenovic, referring to the strong start to the match from Safarova. “I couldn’t really play my game. But I just tried to go on, keep going, play aggressive. I wasn’t thinking about the win.”

She will now continue to go on, and next meets American qualifier Taylor Townsend for the first time. The 18-year old Townsend knocked off Julia Goerges on Monday.

American Sloane Stephens continued her disappointing 2014 campaign on Tuesday as she was ousted by friend and fellow American Christina McHale. The Teaneck, New Jersey native beat the fourth-seeded Stephens 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 to advance in Washington.

“Obviously playing someone I’ve grown up with and played against a lot, that’s tough playing someone like that,” said Stephens after the match.

The 21-year old Stephens parted ways with Coach Paul Annacone last week after struggling in major tournaments this season. She has failed to get any farther than the Quarterfinals in any tournament she has played thus far.

As for McHale, she now moves on to play American Vania King for a spot in the third-round.

Defending champion Magadalena Rybarikova of Slovakia was bounced in her first-round match. Second-seeded Ekaterina Makarova cruised to the 6-1, 6-1 victory over last year’s champion, pushing her into the second-round where she will meet American Lauren Davis.
