The ATP has fined Australia’s Nick Kyrgios $16,500 for his actions during his second-round match at the Shanghai Rolex Masters against Mischa Zverev on Wednesday.

The fine was broken into three parts: $10,000 for showing a “lack of best efforts”, $5,000 for verbal abuse of a spectator and $1,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Zverev defeated Kyrgios 6-3, 6-1, as Kyrgios walked away from the court as Zveverev was serving at one point, and also delivered a weak serve with no effort, clearly rushing through the straight-set match. At one point, Kyrgios yelled to a fan that was criticized him during a match: “You want to come here and play.”

“I don’t owe them anything,” Kyrgios said in the post-match press conference when asked how he justifies his play when fans pay money to watch. “It’s my choice. If you don’t like it, I didn’t ask you to come watch. Just leave. If you’re so good at giving advice and so good at tennis, why aren’t you as good as me? Why aren’t you on the tour? You want to buy a ticket? Come watch me. You know I’m unpredictable. It’s your choice. I don’t owe you anything. [It] doesn’t affect how I sleep at night.”
