Congratulations to Long Island’s 6.0 and 8.0 Mixed-Doubles teams who both won at Sectionals and will be advancing to the National Championships. The 6.0 team played out of Christopher Morley and is captained by Darlene Sotomayor. The 8.0 team played out of Long Beach Tennis and is captained by Andrew Camacho. Good luck to both teams!

Politics, religion and civil rights really do not belong as subject material in Long Island Tennis Magazine or does it? The number two Oklahoma Sooners fell behind early in doubles, but stormed back to win the doubles point and carried that momentum to the singles courts in a 4-2 win over number one USC to win the 2015 ITA Division I National Men's Team Indoor Championship hosted by the University of Illinois at Midtown Athletic Club. The Sooners claimed victory in their first finals appearance, while USC moves to 3-7 in ITA National Indoor finals.

The United States is set to face Argentina on the road in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II First Round on an outdoor red clay court at the Pilara Tennis Club in Buenos Aires, Feb. 7-8. U.S. Fed Cup Captain Mary Joe Fernandez has a strong team heading to Argentina, with world number one and 19-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams and world number 11 and seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams leading the team.

Before I give the league report for this issue, I wanted to take a minute to honor a very special woman: Susan Alvy. Susan lost her battle with cancer on Nov. 10. She was the manager of Rockville Racquet, a Long Island board member for the USTA League, winner of the Hy Zausner Lifetime Achievement Award, along with being someone whose friendship I valued.

After Roger Federer’s loss to Gael Monfils on Friday, the Davis Cup Final was all tied at 1-1 heading into a crucial doubles match that would swing the best-of-five series. Thus, Swiss captain Severin Luthi made the decision to play Federer & Stan Wawrinka in the doubles contest instead of originally slated Marco Chiudinelli & Michael Lammer.

The recently formed Sportime Massapequa Women's 3.0 55+ USTA team came in first place in Albany at the USTA Sectionals this past weekend, are now headed to the Nationals in Arizona the end of October.
