The USTA and U.S. Davis Cup Captain Jim Courier have announced that new top-ranked American and world number 20 Sam Querrey, number 23 John Isner, and the world’s top doubles team of Bob & Mike Bryan will represent the U.S. in the 2013 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Quarterfinal tie against Serbia, April 5-7. The tie will be played on an indoor hard court at the Taco Bell Arena in Boise, Idaho.

The USTA and U.S. Fed Cup Captain Mary Joe Fernandez has announced that Melanie Oudin will replace Sloane Stephens on the United States Fed Cup team for the 2013 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group First Round in Rimini, Italy, set for Feb. 9-10. Oudin joins Fed Cup rookies Varvara Lepchenko and Jamie Hampton as well as doubles stalwart Liezel Huber.

I have been coordinating the USTA Leagues on Long Island for 26 years. When I started, there were about 400 in the league and this number has grown to over 4,000 players. As another season comes to an end, I was thinking about some of the good experiences I’ve had or heard about from the league over the years.

Last year as a junior, Josh Levine of Cold Spring Harbor won both the Nassau County and New York State Singles Titles en route to an undefeated season. At this past weekend's 2012 Nassau County Individual Championships, Levine, the top seed, defended the first of those titles in his senior season, with a straight-set 6-4, 6-4 win over his friend, Andrew Yaraghi of Friends Academy.

World number two-ranked Rafael Nadal has made some complaints to the ATP for allowing a new blue-clay surface at the Madrid Open beginning this weekend in Spain. During a practice session, Nadal had trouble on the new surface, claiming it was soft and slippery. Along with this change, he is also displeased with the placement of new advertising boards on the court.
