For the second consecutive week, Timea Bacsinszky knocked off Caroline Garcia in a tournament final, capturing the Abierto Monterrey Afirme title with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory on Sunday. Just last week, Bacsinszky defeated Garcia 6-3, 6-0 in Acapulco to win the Mexican Open crown.
The match was much closer this time around as Garcia took the first set 6-4. Bacsinszky tried to grab momentum back and jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second, but a rain delay would halt the match for four hours.
After the weather delay, Bacsinszky seemed to be the one who was more ready to play. She was able to roll through the remainder of the second set 6-2, and closed it out with a 6-4 third set.
“I’m just really happy to play so well at the beginning of the year,” said Bacsinszky. “I’m going to keep trying to push my limits in the next tournament I’m playing. I hope to keep improving all parts of my game, doesn’t matter whether I’m winning or losing.”
The title is only the third of her career, with two of them coming in the last two weeks. Bacsinszky is now ranked 26th in the world, while Garcia jumps up to 28th in the world.
