High School Recap: Commack and Oceanside Get Season Underway With Victories

Even though the weather hasn’t really shown it, the spring season is upon us. Thus, a number of the boys’ high school teams on Long Island began their season’s this past Friday. Below are some of the results from the weekend’s action:
Commack 7, West Islip 0
The Commack Cougars notched its first win of the season on Friday, sweeping all seven matches to defeat West Islip 7-0 on the road. Commack was led by its first and second singles players, Andy Zhou and Peter Yu, who both picked up wins to help Commack win in a non-league contest.
Oceanside 5, Bellmore JFK 2
Oceanside hosted Bellmore JFK on Friday and came out on the winning side with a 5-2 victory. The Sailors were able to pick up victories in two very tight doubles matches. At first doubles, Michael Wohlgemuth and Nathan Cyrulnik beat Bellmore JFK’s Harris Bauman and Rob Freed 7-5, 6-4, while Timmy Cecerer and Jake Yardeni won 6-4, 7-6(5) at second doubles.
West Hempstead 4, Sewanhaka District 3
Kevin Cairo led the way for West Hempstead with a 7-5, 6-1 win at third singles.
Great Neck North 5, Manhasset 2
Great Neck North began conference play at home on Friday, defeating Manhasset 5-2. Sophomore Alan Delman came back from a set down to beat Matt Holweger 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 at first singles and lead the Blazers to a victory.
Also getting the 2015 started with victories were East Meadow, a 6-1 winner over Hicksville, and Roslyn, a 5-2 winner over Garden City.
