North Hills Doubles Up Pine Hollow 18-9 in LIPLT Weekend Match

North Hills brought their "A" game to Pine Hollow Country Club on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 1st for a showdown with Pine Hollow in the Long Island Professional Tennis League (LIPTL). North Hills remained on top of their game throughout the match, defeating Pine Hollow by a score of 18-9. Both teams were forced to bring in substitutes for their roster, as some of the regular players were unable to attend.
In women’s singles, Julia Elbaba, playing for Pine Hollow, substitued for Anna Bielen-Zarska; Shinann Featherston, playing for North Hills, substitued for Katka Sevikova; and in men’s singles, Darrin Cohen took the place of Robert Jenderlund on the Pine Hollow squad.
The women’s singles match was a tight one, with both players unable to hold their serve early on. Pine Hollow took the lead at 3-2, but Elbaba was unable to keep the momentum on her side. She hit a couple of unforced errors into the net and Featherston was able to take advantage. She steadied herself and was the first to hold serve, taking the lead 4-3. From there, Featherston maintained her poise, moving Elbaba side to side and was able to hold on for the 6-4 victory.
It was up to Cohen to save the day for Pine Hollow, a task that proved to be too much, as Morgernstern quickly built a 3-0 lead. From there, he never looked back, eventually going up 5-0 and capping off an easy victory, 6-1.
The doubles portion was much more competitive, as both teams kept the score tight throughout the set. Cohen & Elbaba played brilliantly at the net for Pine Hollow and Morgenstern & Featherston moved well together on the court. North Hills was able to stay one step ahead of Pine Hollow throughout the set, leading 2-1, 4-3, 5-4 and eventually winning, 6-4.
"It was a rough day for us," said Pine Hollow’s Coach and Director of Tennis Butch Seewagen. "We play at North Hills next Friday in the last match of the season. We will be looking for a little revenge, I know that."
Long Island Tennis Magazine will be on-hand again next Friday, Aug. 6th as the second LIPTL season comes to a close when North Hills hosts Pine Hollow.
