Fifth-seed Kei Nishikori of Japan withdrew from Wimbledon with a calf injury on Wednesday, just hours before he was set to take the court against Santiago Giraldo in the second round.

Nishikori was bothered by a calf injury in his Wimbledon opener against Simone Bolelli, a match that went the distance. He said he felt a lot of pain during warm-ups prior to his match Wednesday and described the injury as a “small tear”.

“I was hurting just walking and running, so I decided not to play today,” said Nishikori. “I thought I was playing well on grass.”

Nishikori also withdrew from the semifinals of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany prior to Wimbledon, and said it felt better heading into the third Grand Slam of the season.

As for Giraldo, he walks over into the third round, and will play the winner of the match between American Denis Kudla and German Alexander Zverev.
