Venus Continues Streak at Open

Today marked the 17th consecutive time that 35-year-old Venus Williams entered the U.S. Open and got through to round two. This time around, it was Monica Puig who fell victim to Venus, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.

He two-time U.S. Open champion is seeded 23rd this time out, and awaits the winner of the all-American encounter between Irina Falconi and Samantha Crawford to determine her second round opponent. Venus was forced to sit out of the recent Western & Southern Open due to a viral illness, but returned today to Flushing Meadows to move her to a 60-7 lifetime record in the first round of Grand Slam events.

"She played so well from behind, which is a great attribute, so there's good things to come from her," Venus said of Puig.
