Americans Lose Second Straight at Hopman Cup

Lleyton Hewitt led the Australia Gold team past the United States team at the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia on Tuesday, downing American Jack Sock 7-5, 6-4 as a part of the 3-0 victory for the Australians.

Hewitt turned back the lock and displayed some phenomenal return tennis to counter the powerful serve of Sock. He secured a break in each set to defeat Sock and lock up the victory for his team.

“I couldn’t wait to get out there; a fantastic atmosphere, my last night match at the Hopman Cup,” said Hewitt. “I was pretty pumped up; this is why you play the game to go out and perform on those big stages and I love playing for my country.”

The bigger story coming out of the Hopman Cup so far this week though has been the health of top-ranked Serena Williams. She pulled out of her match on Monday with knee inflammation, and on Tuesday, retired from her match against Jarmila Wolfe while trailing 5-7, 1-2 with a knee injury.

“I just have some inflammation that’s been going away very slowly,” she said. “It’s going away, but just needs a little more time. I’ve been training really hard during the offseason. Really pushing myself beyond the limits. I just think a day off or two will make a world of difference.”

The win improves Australia Gold to 1-1, while the United States falls to 0-2.
