American Shelby Rogers continued her storybook run at Roland Garros on Sunday, advancing to her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Irina-Camelia Begu in just under 90 minutes. Begu was the latest victim in Rogers’ run to the quarters, defeating the 17th-seed Karolina Pliskova, Elena Vesnina and the 10th-seeded Petra Kvitova coming into Sunday. Awaiting Rogers in the quarters is the number four seed Garbiñe Muguruza, a 6-3, 6-4 winner on Sunday over 2009 French Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.
"If you don't expect to do well, then maybe you shouldn't play, you know,” said Rogers, currently ranked 108th in the world. “I keep going back to trying to treat this as any other tournament, any other tennis match. Obviously the stakes are much higher and the players are much better. I'm just trying to stick with my routines and do what I have been doing all year."
The quarterfinals match between Rogers and Muguruza will mark their first career meeting. Muguruza has yet to advance past the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.
"I think each tournament is different,” said Muguruza. “I can't really compare things. Of course, I'm very happy to have qualified this morning for quarterfinals. This is where I have stopped in the past, which means I'm extremely motivated to move on.”
