Bryan Brothers Begin U.S. Open Campaign With Win
Rubin, Nguyen Fall In Doubles Opener
Mike and Bob Bryan kicked off their push for a sixth U.S. Open title in routine fashion on Wednesday, dispatching Martin Klizan and Adil Shamasdin 6-1, 6-3 to reach the second round in the Men’s Doubles draw.
The pair raced out to a quick victory in the first set, breaking twice in three chances and dominating on serve to win the opener in just 22 minutes. Two more breaks in the second set allowed the pair to cruise into the second round in just 59 minutes on Court 17.
Up next for the third-seed pair is Jonathan Erlich and Santaigo Gonzalez.
Earlier in the day, Long Island’s Noah Rubin and former University of Southern California standout Daniel Nguyen fell to Nick Kyrgios and Daniel Evans. Kyrgios and Evans were able to notch five break points in the match, including the decisive one in the second set, when Kyrgios hit a backhand lob on break point for a 4-3 advantage, and they would close out the 6-3, 6-3 victory.
“It was fun. I haven’t played doubles since college and Daniel and I have never played together but we had a good time,” said Rubin of playing doubles in the U.S. Open. “It was a great experience. I’m looking forward to playing mixed doubles with Jamie [Loeb] tomorrow.”
