Long Island High School Recap: April 10, 2018

After a week off, the high school tennis season on Long Island returned on Monday.

In Conference I action, Roslyn defeated Cold Spring Harbor 6-1 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Cold Spring Harbor would win the first singles match as Matthew Cashin beat Zach Khazzam 6-3, 6-0. Roslyn, however, would win the other six flights anchored by Mikey Weitz’s 1-6, 6-2, 10-6 comeback win over Griffin Schlesinger at second singles.

The Syosset Braves continued its winning streak with a 7-0 win over Manhasset, extending the streak to 54.

The win was clinched by Co-captain Eli Grossman, who won 6-1, 6-0 against Manhasset’s Richard Kelly.

Port Washington notched its first win of the season by downing Great Neck North 5-2. Zachary Gruber led the way for Port Washington with a 6-2, 7-6(1) win over Josh Rothbaum.

Plainview JFK swept all three singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory over Jericho. Jared Phillips, Anthony Casale and Ethan Treiheft each won their singles matches to lead the Hawks to the win.

In Nassau II-B action, South Side won its second straight to begin its spring season. The Cyclones won 5-2 against Valley Stream Central and Phil Frank led the way with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at third singles.

Massapequa got into the win column with a 5-2 triumph over Lynbrook. Niles Ghaffar, Matthew Waterhouse and Joseph Menichini led the way for the Chiefs as each won their respective singles match.

Hicksville shook off a defeat in the first singles flight to beat New Hyde Park 6-1 on Monday in Conference III-A. Neeraj Punel defeated Vish Sharma 6-2, 7-5 at second singles and Navneet Lingala won 6-4, 6-1 against Dave Budhram at third singles to lead Hicksville.

The Wantagh Warriors improved to 2-0 on the young season by beating Division 7-0. Wantagh was led by the comeback victory from Raul Fernandez at second singles, who fought back from a 1-5 deficit to beat Philip Konior 6-4, 7-6(2) .
