Syosset Defeats CSH to Remain Undefeated in Conference I

Syosset used its depth and strong doubles play to defeat Cold Spring Harbor 5-2 in a Conference I matchup on Friday afternoon.
Cold Spring Harbor would win both top singles matches as Nicolette Loeffler won at first singles and Maddy Richmond won at second singes. But Sarah Wong won her match in straight sets at third singles for the Braves, and all four of Syosset’s doubles teams picked up victories, including two that went the full three sets, to clinch the team win.
At first doubles, Stephanie Wiener & Alexa Brecher came back from a set down to defeat Allison Futter & Lili O’Donnell 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-4, while Olivia Tiegerman & Alex Flicker snuck past Julia Stingi & Allie Lynch 7-6(3), 7-6(4) in a close second doubles match.
“It was very windy today, so a key was utilizing the wind to our advantage,” said Flicker. “We worked well together. Liv [Tiegerman] has a lot of power so she put more balls away while I used more finesse and tried to keep the ball away from the net player.”
Sarah Schwartz & Ruth Abraham outlasted Jolie Nemshin & Hailey Schulsinger 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at third doubles and Sanya Jolly & Jenna Koeppel defeated Kaitlyn Fare & Jillian Coughlin 6-4, 6-1 at fourth doubles to complete the Syosset victory.
“I served well and Sarah played well at the net,” said Abraham. “We don’t get down on ourselves so even we lost the second set, we were able to come back and win the third.”
Schwartz added, “They key to our win today was our ability to communicate well throughout the match and played to our strengths.”
Great Neck North got a clean sweep of the singles courts to defeat Manhasset 4-3 on Friday. Alina Lyakhov, Alyssa Ghassabian and Margaret Hayakin won at first, second and third singles respectively, while the second doubles pairing of Anushka & Sachita Gupta won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 over Ida Poulous & Emily Ma for the Blazers’ victory.
Carle Place continued one of its best starts in a long time for the program with a 5-2 win over Baldwin. The Frogs’ clinching win came from fourth doubles as Alexa Mastrangelo & Rita Lin notched a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Gabriella Pidne & Kailyn Mejia.
South Side freshman Meghan Sherlock won 6-3, 6-3 at third singles to lead the Cyclones to a 6-1 win over New Hyde Park and improve the team to 6-0 on the season, while Jericho was led by Varsha Bansal & Sarah Josinsky, who won 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 against Maddie Driscoll & Alex McMahon in a 5-2 win over Locust Valley on Friday.
Defending Long Island champion Port Washington beat Oceanside 6-1 to stay undefeated. Charlotte Fortman & Brittany Polevikov won 6-0, 6-4 against Christina Kessler & Emma Haertig at first doubles to lead the Vikings.
