Kim Clijsters from Belgium was defeated by Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-3, in the finals of the Open Gaz De France on Sunday, but claimed the top spot in the WTA rankings from previous number one Caroline Wozniacki.

"I think in the past matches where I beat her, she showed some of the best tennis but it wasn’t quite consistent," said Clijsters. "Today, she was very consistent in her level, so she deserved to win because she was better."

In victory, Kvitova dedicated the trophy to her late grandfather who passed away just last week. Kvitova, named WTA Newcomer of the Year in 2010, has won 16 of her 17 matches so far this season in ousting Clijsters, the 2011 Australian Open champ.
