Federer, Roddick and Djokovic Move on at the BNP Paribas Open
Clijsters forced to retire due to shoulder injury
Roger Federer, Andy Roddick and Novak Djokovic all advanced at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California. Roddick ousted fellow American John Isner, 7-5, 6-2, and is one of three Americans still left at Indian Wells. Twenty-ninth-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina fell to Federer, 6-0, 6-2, while Djokovic dispatched of Ernests Gulbis 6-0, 6-1. Other winners on the men’s side included the number seven seed Tomas Berdych, the number 12 seed Stanislas Wawrinka and the number 16 seed Viktor Troicki. Jurgen Melzer, seeded 10th lost to Richard Gasquet, 6-1, 6-3. In a matchup of wild cards, American Ryan Harrison defeated Canadian Milos Raonic, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4. Harrison moves on to face Federer on Wednesday night.
On the women’s side, top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki defeated Alisa Kleybanova, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. Maria Sharapova also advanced to the quarterfinals at Indian Wells with a 6-2, 6-0 win over fellow Russian Dinara Safina.
Kim Clijsters was forced to retire from her match against the number 15 seed Marion Bartoli due to an injury to her right shoulder. Clijsters won the first set 6-3 and trailed 3-1 in the second when she was forced to exit the match. Clijsters plans to fly to Miami and receive treatment. She wants to be fully healed for Belgium’s upcoming Fed Cup matches and the clay court season.
“Makes me realize that I’m not the youngest one out there anymore and that I’m also probably not recovering as fast as in the past,” Clijsters said.
Also moving on at Indian Wells on the women’s side include the number 10 seed Shahar Peer who defeated the number five seed Francesca Schiavone, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3), and eighth-seeded Victoria Azarenka who knocked off the number nine seed, Agnieszka Radwanska, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).
