Tip of the Week: Have a Convenient Memory

Let’s face it—almost every tennis match you play will be a roller coaster ride.

There will be lots of highs and lows. The longer you are on the court, the more likely this will be the case. If you look at both the Men’s and Women’s 2018 Australian Open singles finals, all four players had their share of positives and negatives. In both cases, the winner of the match was the player who was best able to handle the adversity.

Simply put, Federer and Wozniacki did a better job of having a “convenient memory”. They used the positives that were happening to build some momentum, and they were able to ignore the missed opportunities they had along the way. Both champions played more points as if they were the deciding point in the match. Being able to block out the negatives and recapture the positives is the key to playing the next point well.

Practice this mentality as much as you practice your technique on the court. Congratulations to Roger and Caroline-both of these were amazing accomplishments!
