Powerade Beach Tennis Event Invades Aruba

Americans take the mixed-doubles title

April 5, 2011 | By Jochem Ros

A packed Eagle Beach was the scene for the third ranking tournament of the 2011 Beach tennis Aruba season. More than 80 teams battled in the sand and through different levels of competition, while spectators enjoyed the amazing ocean views, laidback vibes of the DJ, cold drinks and a BBQ. While this competition is very competitive amongst the players, entertainment was everywhere, and fun was certainly had by all.

The tournament started with a junior event from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m., and then the rest of the tournament was played until 6:00 p.m. In between matches, players enjoyed the entertainment, food and swam in the ocean. What a great way to spend the day!

In most categories, the top-seeded teams did what they had to do and made it to semis and finals. In mixed-doubles action, there was an international flavor to the victors, as David Sickmen/Emilie Katz from Long Island, N.Y. took the title. They are regular visitors to Aruba to play in beach tennis events on the island, but surprised the competition with a dominant 7-1 semifinal win and again in the finals winning 7-2. They competed strongly in the pro men’s and women’s doubles events as well.

The day concluded with some very highly-paced play in the finals on center court between the teams of Jochem Ros & Jan Roodzant and Sergio Jie Sam Foek & Cado de Lannoy. On this day, it was Ros & Roodzant who were the victors.
