WTA number one ranked Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark has advanced to the third round of the Madrid Open with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Serbian Bojana Jovanovski. Wozniacki broke her opponent twice in the first set and three times in the second, while saving eight of the 11 break points she faced. Also advancing on the women’s side was Australian Samantha Stosur with her 7-6 (1), 7-5 of Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova. Third-seeded Francesca Schiavone from Italy also advanced with her 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 win over another Italian, Sara Errani.

On the men’s side, an injured Agrentinian Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina defetaed the number 13 seed, Russian Mikhail Youzhny, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the second round. Del Potro, the 2009 U.S. Open champion who missed much of last season after having wrist surgery, struggled with what appeared to be a hip injury in the second set and called for on-court medical treatment. De Potro will face Marin Cilic from Croatia in his next match.

Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Pere Riba of Spain, 6-4, 6-2, to also advance, as did the number six seed, David Ferrer of Spain, with 7-5, 0-6, 6-0 win over Adrian Mannarino of France.
