Roddick Shocked by Qualifier Flavio Cipolla at Madrid Open

American Andy Roddick has been eliminated from the first round of contention at the Madrid Open by Italian qualifier Flavio Cipolla, who upset the upset the former world number one-ranked player, 6-4 6-7 6-3. The number 12 seed Roddick had his serve broken four times by Cipolla, currently ranked 160th in the world.

In a battle of Americans it was the 12th-ranked Mardy Fish losing out to his fello9w countryman, John Isner, 7-6 4-6 7-6. Wild card entrant Juan Carlos Ferrero was defeated by qualifier Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands, 2-6 7-5 6-4, and France’s Gael Monfils defeated Croatian Ivo Karlovic, 6-3, 7-6.
