The number seven seed Maria Sharapova of Russia defeated Australian Sam Stosur 6-2, 6-4, in the finals of the 2011 Italian Open in a short 1 hour, 23 min. match in Rome. En route to the finals, Sharapova defeated the number one-ranked WTA player Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark in the semifinals.

“This is just the beginning of many things to come," said Sharapova as she prepares for this week’s French Open in Paris. "This is just the start of everything.” Her finals win at the Italian Open was her first since last year’s title victory at the Internationaux de Strasbourg in France.
