Local Tennis Action on the Island This Weekend

A number of local tennis events will highlight the area’s local tennis action this weekend. The Talbert Cup will be played at Sportime Roslyn in Roslyn, N.Y.; the 2011 Suffolk County Boys Invitational will take place on Saturday, May 21st at Harborfields High School & Mt. Sinai Middle School tennis courts; and Saturday will also feature the conclusion of last week’s rain-shortened 2011 Boys High School Individual Nassau County Championships at Oceanside High School. 

 

 

 

The Talbert Cup • May 20-21

The Talbert Cup, an annual event established in 1986 by the Eastern Tennis Association in honor of the Hall of Fame player and longtime friend of tennis, Bill Talbert, will take place Friday-Saturday, May 20-21 at Sportime Roslyn, located on Landing Road in Roslyn, N.Y. The event will begin on Friday at 11:00 a.m. and run through 6:00 p.m. The action picks back up on Saturday, May 21 at 9:30 a.m. and will run through 4:30 p.m. The format for the 2011 Talbert Cup will be six singles and three doubles, with each team playing a full two out of three set match with add (new balls for a third set).



2011 Suffolk County Boys Invitational • May 21

The 2011 Suffolk County Boys Invitational will take place Saturday, May 21, 2011 from 2:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. at Harborfields High School & Mt. Sinai Middle School tennis courts. Players may register and play at the closest location. The rain date for the event is Sunday, May 22. There is an entry fee of $20 per player and $40 per team. Net proceeds from the event will go towards award dinner scholarships.

The event is open to all Suffolk County Boys Varsity tennis team players not involved in Counties and State competition. Please note that this is a Suffolk County Junior Tennis League (SCJTL) event and is not affiliated with Section IX-sanctioned competition. There will be first and second place team awards at each site. The tournament awards will be presented at the 2011Suffolk County Boys Varsity Tennis Awards Dinner.



2011 Nassau County Individual Championships • May 21

On Saturday, May 21st, the Boys High School Individual Nassau County Championships will conclude. The semis and the finals will be played beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Oceanside High School in Oceanside, . The tournament began last weekend but due to a rainout last Sunday will be completed this weekend. The top three finishers in both singles and doubles will advance to the NY State Individual Championships to be played June 2-4 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
