Murray Rallies Against Tsonga to Clinch Second London Title at AEGON Championships
June 13, 2011 | By David Drucker
With unfortunate weather on Sunday, the finals of the AEGON Championships in London, England between Andy Murray of Great Britain and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France was postponed to Monday. As play began, Tsonga came out firing, still hot off his stunning upset over world number one-ranked Rafael Nadal. Heavy hitting is what subdued the Spanish foe in the quarterfinals and it gave Murray issues in the first set. However, with great resilience, Murray was able to fight back with precision hitting and take the second set in a tie-breaker. The third set was tight throughout, but high percentage serving from Murray kept him out in front where he would eventually serve out the match to take his second title, 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-4.
Murray, who won this event in 2009, now takes up a little momentum going into Wimbledon. Until now, Murray had yet to win a title this year, which had many fans wondering whether or not he was a legitimate threat at all. Heading into Wimbledon, it seems as if we’re going to wonder the same thing we’ve been wondering since 2005, and that is whether or not Murray can become the first player from Great Britain to win a Grand Slam event since Fred Perry in 1936. Of course, it would be best if Murray were able to deliver in front of the hometown crowd, but he’ll have a tall order in front of him getting through the likes of Nadal, Federer and Djokovic.
