On Thursday afternoon at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Switzerland’s Roger Federer advanced to the third round at the 2011 U.S. Open with his 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 win over Israel’s Dudi Sela. Seeded third at the event and currently ranked third in the world, Federer needed a little over an hour to defeat the 93rd-ranked Sela. Federer awaits the winner of the Thursday afternoon match between Australia’s Bernard Tomic and the number 27 seed, Croatian Marin Cilic.

"I think I’d like to play Bernard [Tomic] for the first time because I’ve never played him before," said Federer forecasting his desired third round opponent. "And if it’s Cilic, it’s a good match anyway because he’s the seed in my section and he’s a good player. He’s beaten Andy Murray here before in the past. I played him as well in Monaco and it was a tough match, but I know what to expect from him."

The win over Sela marked Federer’s 225th career victory at a Grand Slam event, giving him sole possession of second place on the Open era list behind Jimmy Connors and his 233 victories.
